Period Building Conservation is a small family-owned business that focuses on specialist building conservation and restoration works throughout Victoria and southern NSW. The company has been operating in this niche field for more than 30 years and has gained a high reputation in the industry. The company is located in Stanley, in the Northeast of Victoria, and houses in-house bespoke joinery, sheet metal, and structural steel workshops. It also manufactures specialized conservation supplies for use in its own projects and for the wider industry.

Activities

Period Building Conservation is a firm that only works on the restoration & redevelopment of heritage buildings & structures. Works include many Heritage Council & National Trust registered buildings. The firm can provide a broad range of building conservation services either as a complete project package for building owners or any one or more of those services either for the general building industry in their projects, or for owners where only some individual remedial skills are required.

Services provided include:


Fabric Conservation Consulting & Maintenance Planning Services, including

  • Preparation of maintenance plans.
  • Existing condition surveys.
  • Fabric repair & preservation investigations, recommendations & plans.
  • Preparation of multi building databases of repairs & maintenance including assignment of priorities, estimated costs, required skills, etc. etc.

Structural Repairs & Stabilisation, including

  • Masonry construction;
  • Timber framing;
  • Underpinning;
  • Structural steel & reinforced concrete remedial works;
  • Restumping, especially to sensitive structures e.g. lath & plaster lined;
  • Remedial masonry reinforcement & tying.

Masonry Repairs, including

  • Brickwork repairs & new matching works;
  • Repointing to stone & brickwork;
  • Tuckpointing to stone & brickwork;
  • Remedial dampcourse installation using electro osmotic, chemical, load bearing envelope or traditional physical barrier methods;
  • Desalination of masonry using Westox “Cocoon” and captive head washing;
  • Availability to work in lime putty, hot lime, hydrated lime, & Portland Cement mortars.

Timber Repairs, including

  • General carpentry repairs;
  • Chemical preservation treatments;
  • Termite investigation, prevention & remedial repairs;
  • Natural round timberwork;
  • Manufacture & installation of exact reproduction timber mouldings;
  • Full joinery repairs & reproduction eg exact to match doors & windows, splice repairs to preserve original fabric etc.

Plaster / Render Work, including

  • Repairs & new matching work;
  • Stabilisation & repairs to lath & plaster;
  • Mouldings, lettering, dentils, etc., recreated & repaired by traditional methods;
  • Patterns, moulds & castings produced for lime, pressed cement, concrete & plaster ornamentation.
  • Availability to work in lime putty, hydrated lime, & Portland Cement renders;
  • Reproduction of fibrous plaster mouldings & panels.

Painting, including

  • General repainting & repairs;
  • Stencilling, linework, cornice & rose artwork, all by traditional methods;
  • Lime & cement washes prepared & applied by traditional methods.

Damp rectification, including

  • Rising damp treatment;
  • Drainage rectification.

Roofing Works, including

  • Installation & repair of all types of metal roofing;
  • Fabrication & installation of traditional lead work, including beating & burning;
  • Slate roof repairs & installations;
  • Timber shingle roof repairs & installations, including custom manufacture of split & sawn shingles to match existing;
  • Terracotta shingle & tile roof repairs & installations, including custom manufacture of tiles & accessories where required;
  • Manufacture, repairs & installation of metal rainwater goods, including in-house custom manufacture of traditional rainwater goods (gutters & angles, downpipes, rainheads, ventilators, skylights etc. all to exactly match original profiles);
  • Conservation & replacement of cast iron guttering, downpipes, rainheads etc, including cast iron weld repairs by a variety of methods, re-creation of missing parts, corrosion control etc;
  • Difficult access works requiring, freestanding, hanging, suspended, cantilevered or tower scaffolding, non-contact roof guard-railing, elevated work platform or crane & basket access.
