The recruitment process

Candidates are expected to demonstrate they’re motivated, rounded and interested in the work the firm does. Candidates are also required to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as these are crucial to interacting productively with clients. There’s a strong team culture at McGrathNicol, so candidates who can demonstrate they are team players have an edge. The firm recruits many (though not all) of its Grads through its Summer Vacation Program. This runs for four or eight weeks over the Christmas break.

If you secure a spot in McGrathNicol’s Grad program, you will be employed on a full-time permanent basis. As a graduate, we will acquire broad commercial skills while working in all areas of the business, be involved in major projects and be given significant autonomy and responsibility. You will complete a Graduate Development Workshop and numerous technical and soft-skills training programs. There will be plenty of opportunities to hone your business writing, time management, communication and presentation skills. You will have both national and international secondment opportunities. Plus, you will be supported while undertaking the Chartered Accountants Program or further industry-related study.

Career prospects

McGrathNicol is transparent about the skills and competencies its people need to progress to the next level. Employees take part in regular performance and development discussions. They also receive personalised mentoring and coaching programs. The firm is a meritocracy where “promotions are based on ability”.

Employees are supported if they decide to pursue further qualifications. McGrathNicol’s employees have completed Australian Restructuring, Insolvency & Turnaround Association Advanced Certification, the Chartered Financial Analyst Program and the Masters of Business Administration.

The vibe of the place

McGrathNicol’s Sydney headquarters have impressive views of Martin Place and a cutting-edge design that promotes staff interaction and collaboration. You’ll be expected to dress and act professionally in the office, particularly around clients, but you’ll have plenty of opportunities to attend the more casual firm social events. The social functions encourage employee participation in team sports, corporate games and sporting events.

What Graduates Say About Them
  • The best part of working at McGrathNicol is the strong, supportive culture. Everyone is dedicated to helping you succeed and build a solid foundation for your career."
  • The positive and supportive workplace culture allows you to learn quickly as a graduate. It is not long before you are making genuine contributions and working independently.
  • Graduates get to work closely with senior staff like Directors and Partners, which is not an opportunity you receive at larger firms and provides great growth and learning opportunities.
  • Managers are supportive of working 1-2 days a week from home.
  • As a Graduate, you have a formal development program which involves online sessions and in-person camps with graduates across the country and all service lines.
  • Lack of resourcing during busy periods can place undue responsibility on younger team members.
  • There are times when work gets very busy, and I stay back a little to meet deadlines.
  • Smaller firm means the grad cohort is smaller.
  • I know some of my friends are on more at a similar level... Pay could be higher as the hours can be long.
  • High expectations during busy periods, which can be stressful… but I like how the McGrathNicol team works together to spread the workload.”
