The Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council (ILALC) is an innovative not-for-profit organization dedicated to upholding and implementing its Community's custodial responsibility. Their mission is to protect and preserve their Country, cultural heritage, and traditions while respectfully promoting and securing their stewardship of these valuable assets.

Key Initiatives:

  1. Managing Our Country: ILALC focuses on protecting, conserving, and restoring natural environments, ecosystems, and cultural heritage sites through culturally appropriate management practices.

  2. Preserving Our Culture: They promote a shared understanding of heritage and culture by delivering education related to their Country and its significance.

  3. Supporting Our Community: ILALC actively engages in community-led projects aimed at safeguarding the interests and advancing the aspirations of its members and the broader Aboriginal community in their relationship with the Country.

ILALC was formed under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983, granting Land Councils the authority to claim ownership of Crown Land. It's important to note that Land Councils operate independently of government funding, sustaining their operations through their own revenue streams. Land ownership empowers ILALC to fulfill its custodial responsibility for Country, knowledge, and traditions, while also promoting and securing its stewardship.

Through culturally appropriate land management, ILALC ensures the protection, conservation, and restoration of natural environments and cultural heritage sites. Their research and education programs help foster a shared understanding of heritage and culture. Additionally, they engage in sustainable development initiatives, partnering with the Community to deliver strength-based, community-led projects that align with the aspirations of their members and the broader Aboriginal community in their relationship with the Country.

ILALC's reach extends across the Local Government Areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Wingecarribee, and parts of Shoalhaven and Goulbernmaluaree.
