The Story of Estée Lauder Australia

Estée Lauder Companies Inc. was founded in 1946. It sells beauty products and fragrances in three main regions: Asia Pacific, The Americas, and Europe, the Middle East & Africa. Their vision is to be the global leader in prestige beauty, and their products are sold in approximately 150 countries under more than 25 brand names.

Estée Lauder first established a presence in Australia in 1965. The brands marketed by Estée Lauder Australia include Estee Lauder, Clinique, M.A.C, Jo Malone London, Bobbi Brown, Creme de la Mer, Aveda, Tom Ford, Aramis & Designer Fragrances and Le Labo. The distribution of their products throughout Australia is managed from their head office and warehousing facilities in Erskineville, NSW.

The company’s main industries are beauty supply and personal care products, cosmetics, gifts and specialties. These products are sold to consumers through retailers including department stores, specialty stores, pharmacies, and salons, and through their own direct-to-consumer online platforms and freestanding stores.

Culture & vibe

A typical day at work might involve ensuring stock levels are at their optimum levels or meeting different types of customers, and you need to deal with them very sensitively and patiently. You might also have the responsibility of achieving daily, weekly and monthly targets with your team.

The company provides ongoing training on new products, great learning opportunities, learning labs, and flexible working hours. There are also opportunities to work across multiple stores and to meet with Lauder makeup artists.

The store was always busy, especially during peak seasons. With high-quality products and a fast-paced environment, you need to have a well-rounded knowledge of all the products, attention to detail, and develop an ability to multitask.

However, you can always count on a great collaborative and supportive team. The approachable employees always allow new members to fit in. The company’s culture values the diversity of people and thoughts and encourages innovation and creativity.

Recruitment process

You need to go to their homepage to view current positions, levels of role, and management opportunities available in their counters, stores and head office locations. When you select a relevant position, the full job description and requirements will be displayed.

To apply, you need to complete the online application form. It will take around 20 minutes to complete. You have the option to complete it right away or you can print it for review and return it to the online application section later. All applications must be submitted online.

You need to make sure the following information and documents are ready: resume, referee contact details, work experience details, education, and your availability (their stores operate seven days a week with extended trading on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. The better your availability is, the more likely you will be selected for the next stage)

The quality of your application is essential in ensuring they understand how your skills and experience are relevant to the position you are applying for. If you are shortlisted, a Retail Field Manager or a Human Resources Business Partner will contact you by phone.

The recruitment process differs slightly in each brand, but usually follows this path: Initial phone interview, Interview 1 with a Retail/Counter Manager or Retail Field Manager, Interview 2 with a Human Resources Business Partner or Head Office representative (depending on the level of role), and two reference checks.

Career prospects

Estée Lauder always advertises internally first to encourage succession planning from within. The combination of on-the-job training with professional qualifications and in-house training often leads to successful succession planning. However, several insiders described that there are only very few corporate roles and limited opportunities to develop past retail or retail management roles.

Benefits

The company provides their employees with benefits and discounts, such as:

  • Breast cancer awareness: In 1992, Evelyn Lauder co-created the Pink Ribbon to raise awareness about breast health. In 1993, she founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), a non-profit organisation that funds breast cancer research and awareness programs worldwide. In Australia, Estée Lauder is also a platinum partner of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
  • Look Good Feel Better: a practical workshop run by the Cancer Patients Foundation that teaches cancer patients to manage the appearance-related side effects caused by cancer treatment. Each participant receives a Confidence Kit containing skincare and make-up products donated by the cosmetic industry to use as tools for application during the workshop and for continued use in their own homes.
  • The Sustainability Committee also holds various events for fundraisers, charities, and environmental activities which all staff have the opportunity to participate. Such events include Earth Hour, Salvation Army Winter Clothes Appeal, Barnados Christmas Gift Appeal, Jeans for Genes Day, National Tree Day, and RSPCA Cupcake Day.
