Stewart House is a charitable organization that supports 1,600 public school children in need each year from New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. These children, aged between school years 2 and 8, stay for 12 days and receive comprehensive care, including medical, optometric, dental treatments, and emotional support. Stewart House balances health and educational programs with out-of-school activities designed to boost children's self-esteem and promote healthier lifestyles.
During their stay, children attend an onsite special-purpose school, operated in partnership with the NSW Department of Education, which provides infrastructure and staffing support. All other expenses related to the children's care—including meals, accommodation, entertainment, transportation, and staff salaries—are covered through charitable donations, totalling around $5 million annually.
Traditionally, NSW public education teachers and staff contribute around $2 million through fortnightly salary deductions, while public school children raise approximately $500,000 through school-based fundraising. The remainder is sourced from personal and corporate donations, private grants, and subsidies.
Stewart House is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment where children feel respected, protected from harm, and emotionally supported. The organization upholds its moral and legal duty to safeguard children from mistreatment and ensures timely reporting of any abuse.
Throughout the Stewart House Program, children develop essential self-care, social, and conflict resolution skills, improve their ability to relax and overcome anxiety, and gain a broader outlook on life. They establish friendships, and routines, and feel emotionally supported in a secure community. Additionally, children receive health screenings, necessary treatments, and basic necessities, such as new shoes, clothing, and toiletries, ensuring their well-being during their stay.
