Position Description

About the opportunity:

  • The NSW SES has several exciting opportunities across the State for Research Officers.
  • They are interested in hearing from people who have skills in research and analytics to support the development of policies and plans that address risk management and strategies in planning for emergencies.
  • This role would suit someone who has research and analytical skills including graduates and professionals who have worked in a research and/or policy role.
  • It is not essential that candidates have emergency service experience as this can be taught on the job by a team of experienced planners and researchers.

They have roles in three functions of the agency:

  • State-focused roles - these roles will set policy direction and have a focus on State based planning and future risk.
  • Zone-based roles - these roles focus on emergency planning for regional risks associated with the relevant Zone. These roles will research and analyze information about risks in these locations including flood analysis and risk likelihoods and consequences of these risks.
  • SHQ-based temporary roles in their Warnings and Intelligence teams supporting the Warnings Framework Project.

About the role:

  • You will utilize your skills to contribute to the research, development, and maintenance of policy, community-focused plans, intelligence, and/or warning systems to safeguard communities from the risk of floods, storms, and tsunamis.
  • This role/s involves working alongside the Zone operational team and working closely with the Emergency Planning team.
  • It also involves participating in and contributing to NSW SES planning by preparing, reviewing, and updating agency emergency plans and readiness initiatives.
  • You will also work with internal and external stakeholders with the common goal of reducing flood risk and developing plans that support their volunteers to be able to effectively respond to emergencies.
