About the role

As a member of a Zone or State planning team, your responsibility is to manage planning priorities associated to the zone and/or Emergency Risk Management Branch and guide your teams to meet set business and operational targets.  The key focus will be to lead the development of plans and policies that reduce the impact of flooding for at-risk communities.

These plans and policies provide our agency and our volunteers with critical intelligence on risks and consequences to support the development of effective response strategies for managing emergencies.

You will achieve this through building and influencing effective intelligence, planning and response capability to meet community expectations and ensuring that floods, storms, and tsunami are effectively addressed across whole-of-government and private sector emergency planning frameworks.

Using your strong people and communications skills, you will lead a team of research officers and work alongside the branch, zone and unit planning teams, to collaborate and strengthen the strategic reduction of risk to communities through effective management and prioritisation of planning requirements.

The Coordinator Planning role is varied in nature however some of the typical work involved includes:

  • Contributing to the Branch / Zone Business Planning
  • Managing and supporting a team of researchers to analyse available research data related to flood behaviour, identify the vulnerabilities of local communities to the consequences of storms, floods and tsunamis and effectively support the development of emergency plans, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure the agencies planning process aligns with the NSW Planning Framework and internal NSW SES governance policies and guidelines.
  • Assess, prioritise, and delegate incoming referrals and risk information amongst the team to capture intelligence and data that would inform effective planning of emergency response.
  • Attending and representing the NSW SES on external forums, meetings, and committees to provide advice and share knowledge on evidence-based information relating to risks and consequences of floods to influence decisions amongst councils, emergency service agencies and other organisations.
  • Work closely with volunteers’ members to leverage local knowledge and expertise and support effective communication and collaboration to meet operational targets.
  • Contribute to maintaining framework and templates to comply with functional and strategic objectives of the cohort team.
