About The Opportunity
SWSLHD operates its services on the lands of the Dharawal Darug and Gundungurra lands and has a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our district's Aboriginal Health Unit. We are a district that is committed to supporting you grow and develop your skills. You will have the opportunity to access cultural supervision and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce across a broad range of service areas.

Want to work in a job where you can make a difference to help improve the health of our Aboriginal people and communities? This is a temporary position and classified as an Allied Health Assistant. The location of the site is negotiable between all facilities and services covered by South Western Sydney Local Health District. Cadet applicants need to have completed at least one semester in their course of study.

Professional entry-level Allied Health courses include:

  • Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Podiatry
  • Physiotherapy
  • Social Work
  • Speech Pathology
  • Exercise Physiology

The Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetships offer the cadets:

  • A study allowance of $600 per fortnight (minus tax) commencing at the beginning of each academic year, for a maximum of up to 40 weeks. Cadets also receive $500 each semester for books and equipment
  • A work placement of up to 12 weeks in paid employment in an allied health role in a local public health facility
  • The opportunity to consolidate theoretical knowledge and to practise clinical skills in a public health facility during a work placement period
  • The opportunity to work in a local public health facility while completing allied health studies
  • An income while studying
  • Support and mentoring by professionals – both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal – already working within health settings
  • The opportunity to develop both cultural and allied health links

What you'll be doing 
The Aboriginal Allied Health Cadet is employed in a learning capacity to work towards attaining competency as an Allied Health Professional.

The work placement will be planned to complement the theoretical component of the cadet’s course of study. SWS will take responsibility to determine the level at which the Cadet functions and the allied health duties they can perform throughout the work placement of the cadetship.
Delegation of allied health responsibility and practice will be the responsibility of the supervising Allied Health Professional and will be commensurate with the Cadet’s level of undergraduate education and achievement of clinical competence.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Allied Health degree and successfully completed their first year of the course.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and under the supervision and provide safe compassionate quality care that is culturally responsive.
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders including patients/consumers, carers and the multidisciplinary health care team.
  5. Demonstrated understanding of the principles and values that guide Allied Health practice
  6. Demonstrated computer literacy skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office including management of emails, word processing and database management
