How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
Yes, absolutely approachable and constructive feedback.
Graduate, Melbourne - 13 Nov 2023
Both my managers in my first and second rotation have been great mentors. I have learned so much from them. In my current rotation (2 - Australia) I have regular catch ups with my manager where we can discuss anything that we need to.

Some are amazing some are terrible and should never be in management.
CNE, Sydney - 31 Oct 2023
Direct line manager is fantastic, readily available when needed and is wonderful mentor to staff. Internal communication is often not communicated to staff effectively. Regular performance feedback and recognition is given
Graduate, Warners Bay - 31 Oct 2023
They are accessible, but incredibly stressed from the high caseload and understaffed environment in physio department. She often unload that onto us, not making it a healthiest workplace

No, they are not. Staff don't want to approach them due to their lack of empathy and caring. The NUM basically never leaves the office or nurses station desk. Shut her door and never comes out to help only to tell you how poorly your doing and instead of helping will degrade people. People are leaving because we feel so unsupported and have asked to be heard and nothing is done.

Our managers are supportive and have always advocated for us. I feel that I can rely on them for support and guidance.
Graduate, Perth - 31 Oct 2023
Generally accessible if needed but not overly approachable for things someone else could tell you. Wouldn't approach to ask a clinical question.
Graduate, Brisbane - 31 Oct 2023
Managers are very accessible and helpful when setting catch-up times to go through work
Graduate, Sydney - 31 Oct 2023
No performance feedback unless you do something wrong, no praise or recognition
Graduate, Melbourne - 31 Oct 2023
Group emailing staff with patient feedback and asking for nominations for staff that have excelled each month is rewarding to see.
Graduate, Wollongong - 31 Oct 2023
Our DCS is a very positive and approachable person. She has done very well to continue to improve the culture of the hospital. Middle management are the roadblocks to even more change.

My direct manager is a legend
Graduate, Perth - 31 Oct 2023
They are friendly but often turn a blind eye to issues on the ward and allow new staff to be bullied. Almost like an initiation process. I have done well on performance reviews but often don't know if I am doing well and definitely do not get any recognition.

My manager is great!
Graduate, Brisbane - 31 Oct 2023
My manager is great, again very down to earth and lovely. Always approachable no matter how busy or stressed.
Graduate, Perth - 31 Oct 2023
I have experienced the working style of two NUMs during my graduate year. The first NUM I had a lot to do with in seeking feedback and getting her assistance in resolving workplace conflict. The second NUM I have not spoken much to (or needed to) she trusts her staff to be fairly autonomous but to come to her when needed.
Graduate, Brisbane - 31 Oct 2023
Great mentors, good praise and feedback
Graduate, Gold Coast - 31 Oct 2023
My NUM is amazing she is so supportive and always available for guidance or a general chat. NUM and educators have regular check ins and 1:1 sit downs to discuss where I am at and how I am coping plus an open door policy where we can talk anytime we feel needed
Graduate, Melbourne - 31 Oct 2023
My managers in both rotations have been very accessible, however, because I don't work with them on a day-to-day basis, they aren't always able to provide feedback. I do have monthly catch ups with my current manager to see how I am coping with work.
