What is your current role and how long have you held this role?

My current role manages the service delivery teams in the operations space from our Service Desk, Escalation and technical speciality teams. I started this role in January 2022.

How did you choose your specialisation and why?

I began as a network engineer, I am still passionate about this space and try to stay in touch with the technology. As junior, I was exposed to some amazing network engineers and was drawn to technologies such as MPLS and DSL (I am old 😊)

What does a typical day look like for you?

It varies, we have undergone a large system consolidation program which has been time-consuming. A normal day is split between customer engagement, speaking with the team and planning our next steps.

What is your favourite part of your role and why?

I am a technologist at heart with a passion for customers, so anytime I get to spend talking to customers about technology is my happy place! I like solving problems so these two things fit together well.

Where could you or others in your position go from here?

Anywhere! One of the best things about technology is access to learning and opportunity.

Could someone with a different professional background transition into your role?

People with strong management and customer backgrounds could be suitable.

What was the most exciting task/project that you have worked on?

Working with our team who assisted a key customer on a large-scale cloud transformation or individually (many years ago) deploying one of the first IPv6 ISP networks as an engineer.

What are some challenges that you face?

Our customers, industry solutions and people are constantly changing and ensuring we have the structure and team to support this change is an evolving target.

What advice would you give to graduates that are looking to get a career within the IT industry?

Try to get exposed to different streams, find your passion and then focus.

What was your interview process like? What kind of questions were you asked?

I came from acquisition and held a similar role when acquired so it was less formal. Defining a vision for the team structure and focus areas are key when discussing leadership roles.
