The Wolanski Family Specialist Learning Centre (SLC) at Emanuel School serves students from K-12. As the name suggests, the SLC seeks to ensure that students with learning differences and difficulties flourish within the school to best effect, using targeted, proven teaching techniques in which recent research findings are trialled and embedded. This is somewhat different from more traditional ‘learning support’.

Our Teaching Assistants have an important role to play in assisting the SLC Team and other teachers in the integration and management of students with learning and behavioural difficulties in the mainstream classroom.

A typical day for a TA might include:

  • Assisting in the integration and management of students with learning, behavioural and social difficulties in the mainstream classroom
  • Guiding students in managing classroom expectations, both in terms of academic performance and behaviour, as determined by the teacher and school policies
  • Alerting appropriate staff to any issues related to target students
  • Providing a change of environment or respite to some students as required, by supervising rest breaks of different kinds, as directed by the teachers and SLC staff
  • Assisting teachers with the production of materials for these students as directed
  • Assisting teachers in the delivery of computer-mediated programs and interaction as directed.

The successful candidates will have an Australian-recognised Education Support qualification, a valid Working with Children Check and experience working in a school and/or in a similar education support capacity.
