Your role:

As an Electronics/Communications Engineer Submariner (known in the Navy as a Weapons Electrical Engineering Officer Submariner), you'll serve as one of the Navy's electrical and combat systems experts. You'll lead a team to maintain advanced combat, self-defence, sensor, communications and intelligence systems onboard submarines. This really isn't an ordinary engineering role.

As the engineering authority onboard, you'll get a lot of responsibility early in your career. You're there to make sure the submarine's systems are available for the mission and work effectively and safely. To help achieve this task, you'll work closely with other military units, Defence industries, and Government agencies. The importance of your role can't be overstated.

Teamwork is an important part of the role. You'll work in a close-knit team that really rely on each other. There are also many opportunities for career growth and overseas travel; all while playing a vital role in protecting Australia.

Some of your core duties include, but aren't limited to:

• Leading and looking after the Electrical Engineering team
• Monitoring system performance and failure,
• Developing and evaluating proposed repairs,
• Supervising and evaluating equipment trials,
• Resource management,
• Assigning and scheduling team members, and,
• Finances relevant to your jobs.

Life as an Electronics/Communications Engineer Submariner is constantly changing, with new challenges regularly emerging as the Navy introduces new submarines, technology and systems. To meet these challenges, you'll complete a variety of internal courses and will have the opportunity for postgrad training at different universities throughout your career.

In addition to your core duties, you'll also take on the role of a Divisional Officer. This means taking on leadership, management, and mentoring tasks to both sailors and junior officers.

There is also a wide variety of shore-based positions for periods when you are not posted to a ship including operational planning, project management, career management and general managerial engineering roles.

Salary:

Upon completion of your initial military and initial employment training, you'll enjoy a competitive starting salary package of up to $103,771, plus a submarine maritime allowance while serving at sea.

For this role, you must be an Australian Citizen and able to meet the minimum security, medical and fitness requirements. You'll also need to provide evidence of holding or being near completing an engineering degree, permitting graduate membership to Engineers Australia (EA) as a professional engineer. The preferred disciplines for your degree include: Avionics; Communications/ Telecommunications; Computer Systems; Electrical/Electronics; Electrical (Power); Mechatronics; or Software. Other engineering disciplines will be considered on a case by case basis.
