The hierarchy is fairly flat, everyone is very approachable. people like to have fun after hours but the culture isn't so intense - people also have lives outside of work.

The culture is unmatched in some practice groups where junior culture is a key driver of the group.

I find the culture within teams and the wider firm to be relaxed yet hardworking, my colleagues are approachable with an emphasis on learning. i do not find that there is any competitiveness or rivalry between colleagues which i think is particularly good.
Graduate, Perth - 30 Oct 2023
I have found the culture during office hours to be great - a focus on productivity, both teamwork and individual work, cooperation between teams and friendly team members and partners. after hours culture could be improved slightly. it would be nice to have more office evening drinks/events, such as the 'mexican night' a few months ago. the occurrence of firm lunches and provided for afternoon teas has seemed to decrease.
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Oct 2023
Good culture on anchor days, can be very quiet on common work from home days, social events have declined due to budget issues.
Graduate, Brisbane - 30 Oct 2023
3:2 in office, wfh split. strong culture of social events - have had beach days, lunches, dinners together just for the purpose of hanging out.
Graduate, Sydney - 30 Oct 2023
The firm does not feel very hierarchical compared to other firms. however, cooperation can suffer when seniors prioritise their billable goals at the cost of juniors.
Graduate, Brisbane - 30 Oct 2023
There isn't a strong hierarchy. everyone works collaboratively and most teams have a great social culture outside of work, be that exercise, after-work drinks or morning coffees

While in a law firm with a clear structural hierarchy, i feel as though my superiors are approachable and understanding. i enjoy regular opportunities to socialise with my colleagues during work hours and occasionally after work hours. i think working from home has had a negaitve impact on office culture because sometimes the office is almost empty.
Graduate, Brisbane - 20 Oct 2023
Generally, the firm's culture is very good. i have found that this varies between teams slightly, but overall i feel that the firm is a great place to work. wfh is very flexible across the firm (even for grads), but this also results in low attendance at friday night drinks. generally, the firm puts on some fantastic afterhours social events.

Everyone at ashurst is lovely and down to earth. all senior lawyers / partners are very welcoming and always happy to talk to anyone. you never feel like there is a barrier imposed because of the structure of the firm. ashurst culture is a great mix of people enjoying work and the company of their colleagues while they are in the office but also having lives outside of the firm. there is a degree of socialising amongst colleagues outside of hours where people particularly get along but there is no pressure to do so if you would prefer the company of non-firm people.
Graduate, Brisbane - 07 Dec 2019
In office is relatively relaxed, but out of office is a bit more casual and jovial. i often work directly with partners as the team tends to run lean, but i never feel out of my depth and there's always someone to ask questions of or for assistance. people tend to be friendly and forthcoming with help and queries too.
Graduate, Melbourne - 07 Dec 2019
Very hierarchical, however generally a good emphasis on firm-wide social events. collaboration and team work is greatly encouraged
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Dec 2019
Generally good. there's no expectation of face-time hours and there's a healthy amount of socialising done in the office during and after work hours. could be more lively after hours but i think we all work long hours that can take it out of us early. there is a very flat structure/hierarchy in my current team such that i'm working directly with the partners and senior associates. however, i know this to not be the case elsewhere in the firm. other teams are far less social and approachable, and their hours are needlessly long in that certain tasks are delegated down as "urgent" when they are not, take longer than they need to due to outdated systems/processes, or are delegated at 5pm when it could have been done earlier.

I think that the culture is very good. everyone i work with is lovely. we occasionally socialise after work. i think that teamwork and collaboration could be enhanced in some instances. i think collaboration is sometimes limited because the team is so busy. it would be good to have the opportunity to socialise with my colleagues more, particularly in other teams. it would be good to hear about the work that others in the office are doing and to gain a better understanding of their work, expertise and so on.
Graduate, Canberra - 07 Nov 2019
The overall culture is friendly. there are social activities but the frequency and the extent are much more depending on which team you are in.
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Nov 2019
Structure is formally quite hierarchical given clear distinction between seniority, but the culture is overall great. teams work well on their own and also alongside others. people are friendly, happy to chat and very down to earth.
Graduate, Sydney - 07 Nov 2019
There is a hierarchy. but i think it is a necessary one. we have a good social culture, with regular events, team activities and sports.
Graduate, Perth - 07 Nov 2019
The firm is incredibly culture-driven. it is proud of having approachable and friendly staff. the way i describe it is that the people i work with pass the "pint test". that is, i'd be happy to have a pint with the people i work with outside of the office.
Graduate, Perth - 07 Nov 2019
Optional socialising culture but weekly friday night drinks. lots of chatting and relaxed culture during the day. works across teams a lot. very positive culture.
