Are you looking for an IT Internship Programme with a commercial difference? At Ashurst, we're looking for final year IT students like you with a rare kind of mindset: an openness to the way you work, an agility to the way you think, and a strong desire to keep evolving as a professional. Our IT Internship provides a gateway to access an IT graduate role with Ashurst. We are recruiting for Interns to join our Sydney and Brisbane offices. Most of our graduate roles are offered to people who complete an internship with us.

As a global law firm with a rich history spanning 200 years, we've established ourselves as a leading adviser to corporates, financial institutions and governments, on all areas of the law including finance, M&A, disputes and competition. With 32 offices across the world's leading financial and resource centres, we offer the reach and insight of a global network combined with deep local market knowledge. In an era of ever increasing technological change and demand, we recognise the importance of IT to the success of Ashurst.

If you want to enrich and expand your worldview, grow your skills and influence new ways of thinking, all within a global law firm, we'd like to hear from you!

Your opportunity:

Most of our graduate roles are offered to people who complete an internship with us. We are recruiting for Interns to join our Sydney and Brisbane offices. We hold internships to give you an intensive experience of our culture and the kind of work we do. The role will give you great exposure to high quality commercial IT work and provide you the opportunity to apply and develop your skills across a broad range of IT areas. Our internship programme includes activities and events designed for you to get to know us as a firm and find out if a career at Ashurst is what you are looking for. It includes a comprehensive induction programme, events to understand each legal practice area and activities to ensure you build connections and relationships with other IT Interns and Law Clerks across the firm.

The IT Internship will run for four weeks, commencing Monday, 20 November 2024. As an IT Intern you will rotate through one team during your internship and you'll be given real work in areas like:

  • Cybersecurity
  • Data
  • Business Analysis
  • IT engineering

Shortly after the conclusion of the four week internship, we intend to extend offers to successful candidates for our 2025 IT Graduate Programmes.

If you secure a role in the Ashurst 2025 IT Graduate Programme, you will be part of a team that is involved in running the firm's technology and delivering programmes and IT projects from beginning to end. The programmes are closely tied to the strategic direction of the firm, as well as the policies and initiatives that are influenced and shaped by the change drivers.

Recruitment steps:

  1. Apply on line before 5:00pm on Wednesday, 9 August 2024. We will ask you to upload your CV and Academic transcript. Students must be in their final year of an IT degree to be eligible. You also need to have Australian citizenship or be a permanent resident at the time of application.

  2. Complete our psychometric assessment

  3. Attend an interview. There's absolutely no Ashurst 'type'. We want to actively involve a broad range of minds with a broad range of backgrounds, all united by a common set of strengths. Pros and cons of working at Ashurst

Pros

  • Investment in graduates who are early on in their careers is fantastic. Partners and senior lawyers are largely willing to mentor and take the time to give graduates opportunities to truly experience what their practice is like.

  • Being a part of a very supportive work environment, where I feel part of a team and valued as an employee.

  • Graduate culture and team environment surpasses other top tier firms with the opportunity to get involved with clients from the very beginning.

  • Strong remuneration Strong culture of junior support and continued learning. The firm puts a lot of time and resources into preparing academies and seminars to ensure graduates are informed and educated on their areas outside of just knowing how to perform the tasks.

  • The people are wonderful, and the work is of a very high quality. The international aspect is wonderful as it gives you exposure to numerous practice areas and people, as well as plenty of opportunities to work abroad.

Cons

    • Some of the technology used by the firm is outdated and needs to be modernised

    • Being an international firm means that sometimes general decisions are made that do not provide the best outcomes locally.

    • The hours can fluctuate but this is usually market driven.

    • Hours can sometimes be long, but rarely have they been unreasonable.

    • Due to the nature of working at a top-tier, high-performing law firm, the hours can be quite long and taxing as well as the balance of life and work commitments.
